Derived from the Greek gaia (γαια), meaning "earth," and planktos (πλαγκτός), meaning "wanderer," Geoplankta is the abiotic counterpart to
Züplankta that celebrates the geologic drama of planet Earth (and beyond!). Geoplankta and Züplankta are the sibling brainchildren of artist-designer collective
Züperstudio.
Identity matters; scale figures can enable new forms of creative synthesis. Architecture can grow outward from the qualities of the individual, rather than be passively populated by them. Geoplankta presents a radical strangeness that critiques place, space, and race in a world undergoing frenzied transformation. What does it mean that our most striking satellite imagery is born of the extraction of rare earth metals? What does it mean that amethyst, red fox agate, and opal are all formed of the same material as the sand under our feet? There is a humility embedded in our Earth's geology that often goes overlooked. Geoplankta features a collection of nearly fifty geologic identities with a taxonomic reference sheet for further mineral reading.
All figures are free for the public to download, distribute, edit, publish, and use in any non-commercial manner they choose.
